Representation - Stuart Hall

representation means the way aspects of society and social identity are represented to audiences usually linking to:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Ethnicity
understand how issues and events are represented in media and the effect this'll have on the audience and how they respond

These aspects of representation will change based on context E.G. Advert will have different representation to newspapers

There is About 3 Key themes in Stuart halls representation theory; He believes:

  •  representation is the way in which meanings are produced through the signs and codes that are a part of media language.
  • stereotyping reduces people to a simple, recognizable characteristics
  • stereotyping tends to occur where there are inequalities of power, for example minority groups in society may often be represented as 'other' and 'different'
